![]() I guess the question is, if you're storing files offline anyway, why would you want them to be in some obfuscated location in your library folder? Why wouldn't you not want them to be in whatever folder you choose for your Dropbox or OneDrive folder? If I have to blow an entire weekend reconfiguring my machines due to the ghoulish demands of Dropbox, I may as well switch to a provider that is actually sensitive to users' needs. I am so deeply irritated by this bullshit that I am now looking at other cloud storage providers that won't engage in this kind of behavior. So these changes, which not only break current workflows but might introduce new and persistent headaches, are motivated by features that aren't even relevant to me. I have plenty of local storage space for these files and I am accustomed to managing all of it. These files are core to my daily digital life and I expect them to be available all the time on every device and kept fully in sync. I'm extremely irritated by this change, as I never have and never will rely on on-demand cloud storage for these files. I also found this MacRumors article suggesting that OneDrive users hate this change and find it to be buggy. Some research revealed this article from Microsoft last year regarding similar changes in OneDrive, and, further, that these changes appear to have been prompted by Apple deprecating some kexts that OneDrive had used for syncing cloud storage files. It also raises the ugly prospect of discovering that needed files are inaccessible when I'm offline, and being unable to access them (or, at least, without a lengthy delay). This is alarming, since many of my workflows expect files to be available locally and to be immediately available, rather than waiting to be downloaded from Dropbox. Much more disturbing, the new Dropbox client indicates that all files will be marked as "On-Demand," i.e., potentially not living on my devices but only in Dropbox. This is a huge pain in the ass, as it will require updating about a hundred configuration files to point to the new path. This weekend, I was presented with a message from my Dropbox client that it wants to move all of my locally stored files from ~/Dropbox to ~/Library/CloudStorage. Notably, I want all of the files to remain on all of the devices. I use Dropbox to sync my files between a few devices. This subreddit is not endorsed or sponsored by Apple Inc.
